Barrowhill Farm, Barrowhill Farm Lane, Ramsdean
BJC Planning obtained planning permission in July 2016 for a farm diversification project for holiday lets at Barrowhill Farm in Ramsdean. The application site included Barrowhill farmyard and extended to 1.03 hectares, with a total landownership, including two farms, in excess of 150 hectares. The application proposed the following description of development:
‘Demolition of agricultural barns 1, 4B, 5, 6 & 7; erection of 7 new holiday cottages; conversion of agricultural barns 2 to a reception/laundry room/cycle store and plant room, barn 3 to a holiday cottage and barn 4 & 4A to an indoor swimming pool’.
The income derived from letting the holiday cottages to tourists is to be re-invested back into the farms to enable them to continue trading into the future. By making a more effective use of some of the under-utilised buildings at another site to the northwest, this freed-up space at Barrowhill farm yard to facilitate the holiday let use.
The provision of holiday lets at Barrow Hill Farm will assist in the diversification of the farming operation and will go towards meeting an identified need for this type of accommodation within the South Downs National Park.
A later non-material amendment changed the use of the intended swimming pool building to a dining hall. The development has now been constructed and is known as ‘Barrow Hill Barns’. It offers a splendid collection of 8 luxury self-catering cottages and events space available for booking.
